Reactions- Archetypes
Review by Dani Jamieson
It’s official- I’ve found a new band to add to my list of favorites. A rock/post hardcore band with an almost dreamy feeling to their songs. All the way from Phoenix, AZ, everyone, please give a round of applause to Reactions! In all seriousness though, these guys deserve a hefty pat on the back and a firm handshake. Reactions’s new EP, Archetypes, may only have six songs- but in that small quantity of songs is a massive amount of talent.
It was love at first song. Number one on Archetypes is 'The Shadow'. The song starts out with a gentle intro that reels you in. As soon as you hear the guitars hit to join into this soft, dramatic intro I promise you will be in love. The frontman’s voice only heightens the emotion. He has this beautiful, rich voice (mmm sounds like chocolate) that draws you in. Just talking about it makes me feel all fuzzy. Shut up- you try listening to it without feeling fluffy.
It doesn’t stop there- they do this with EVERY song. They just know how to get to you. I don’t understand. For instance, 'The Self' , starts off dreamy and then they hit you with bricks in the shape of guitars. The desperation in the frontman’s voice as he sings, “Make me, Break me, Please just save me from myself…” really does make you want to go up to each band member individually and say, “Hey, you know what? I will make you…break you, and- yeah because you asked so kindly, I will save you from yourself.” Honestly- you can’t deny them.
Now it’s personal-favorite-time. I happen to love the last song- 'The Animus'. It starts off with a clock ticking and haunting vocals, then softly-dramatic guitars and drums quickly fade in. The vocals take a change in this song- low and high vocal growls (not to the point of false chord, though) sing the verses and go back to their richness during the chorus. For me- if a vocalist is going to scream, they’d better do it well. I love screaming and growls, and to me, it’s an art form. Reactions do such a fantastic job with it and they really made an awesome piece of art with it. It’s almost a mixture of Jesse Leach (Killswitch Engage) and Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage) which is a major plus for me. I give it an A+ times 9,001.
These guys really deserve a medal and a cookie. I don’t even know how to flatter them even more than I have. Although- to really give it up for this band I suggest that everyone see them as soon as they book a concert near you. I gotta make that request soon so I can actually give them said medals and cookies ASAP.
