An Interview with Mark of At The Skylines
Please introduce yourself and the part you play in At The Skylines.
Mark: My name is mark and I'm one of the vocalists for At The Skylines.
Your upcoming record The Secrets to Life comes out on Roadrunner Records on May 8th. What can fans expect to hear from this release?
Mark: With the record, we decided to take every aspect of our music and push it to the extreme. It is definitely our heaviest material as well as our most poppy.
How did the recording process for this release go?
Mark: We spent about 6 months writing. We had a lot of time to fine-tune, which was nice. After that, we flew out to Think Sound Studios to do pre-production with our buddy Drew Fulk. From there, we headed to Sweden to record with Fredrick Nordstrom & Henrik Utt. Ted Jensen then mastered the record back in the US. It was an amazing experience all around.
Where do you find your musical inspiration?
Mark: I would say mostly life experiences. All of us are Disney freaks & we tend to find inspiration from Disney classics. I think it's mostly because they're connected to our memories and childhood experiences. We are also all California boys who grew up going to Disneyland religiously. The album is about growing as a person. We experience the good as well as the bad. The paths we choose to take after the fact define us as people.
What bands are you influenced by?
Mark: Personally, Linkin park. I have been told we are the new age Linkin Park haha, which is an amazing compliment. Besides that, there is just to many bands to name. We all come from different backgrounds of music. I think this is why we are so diverse.
What is your favorite song to play live?
Mark: "It's Cherried." It just has so much energy right off the bat. It just makes me wanna bench press people.
What do you think is the greatest issue in the music industry today?
Mark: Too many egos. This is music. It is suppose to be from your heart. I feel too many bands do this for the wrong reasonsd and it sends out a bad image to our generation. Hopefully we can change that a bit.
If you were abandoned on Mars with a ukulele and a toaster, which would you used to defend yourself against unfriendly aliens and why?
Mark: A toaster!!! Definitely!! I watched the brave little toaster tons of times growing up. If he could go through all that just to get back to his owner, then I think he could aid me in fight against unfriendly Martians.
Is there anything that you would like to conclude this interview with?
Mark: We are all the same, in some form or the other. So love and be there for each other. Life's to short to not be happy every second of the day. So make a difference and don't waste it standing in life's line. Stand out. Be yourself.
